The 2024 Marinova International Science Prize has been awarded to Tasmanian secondary school student Lachlan Crane (pictured left).

The prestigious award is presented annually to a student of The Hutchins School in Hobart, Tasmania. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and active participation in the secondary science program, the prize provides generous financial support for a Year 10 student to participate in a national or international science competition or event. Recipients are required to have demonstrated exceptional skills in science inquiry within a research context and achieved a high standard of knowledge across multiple scientific disciplines. Awardees are expected to continue their studies in science during Years 11 and 12.

Lachlan recently completed an outstanding experimental research project investigating the properties of nine Tasmanian native seaweeds. He will shortly present his research in India at the International Student Science Conference (ISSC). The event will bring together students from around the world, enhancing their understanding of science, fostering an appreciation for global scientific challenges, and facilitating the formation of friendships and networks.

The Marinova International Science Prize includes financial support towards Lachlan's travel costs and also provides the opportunity for mentoring by Marinova’s esteemed scientific research team.

“Tasmania is a global hotspot for biotechnology and marine science,” said Marinova’s CEO & Managing Director, Mr Paul Garrott. “This prize is a practical way for Marinova to support the next generation of innovative Tasmanian scientists. We trust this opportunity will inspire students to further explore their passion for science and we look forward to watching exciting scientific careers unfold.”
