Dermo-cosmetic potential
A recent review paper explores the properties of fucoidans relevant to a range of cosmetic applications. The paper summarises the significant effects reported in terms of moisturising, UV protection, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, anti-ageing, anti-pigmentation, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and wound healing properties. Previous clinical trials undertaken on Marinova's high purity fucoidan extracts are noted in the paper (Fitton, 2015).
The authors report that innovative delivery systems, including hydrogels and nanoparticles, have recently expanded the potential use of fucoidans in the context of enhanced skin penetration and reduced side effects. The paper also addresses the safety profile of fucoidans and highlights their suitability for use in cosmetic formulations. It notes that as the global market continues to demand natural and environmentally friendly products, fucoidan is an attractive proposition to consumers.
Researchers concluded, "By harnessing the potential of this remarkable polysaccharide, the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries can pave the way for innovative products that not only enhance skin health but also align with consumer preferences for natural ingredients."
