Fucoidan research surpasses 5,000 studies

Global research interest in the marine extract fucoidan continues to surge. The number of published, peer-reviewed papers has recently surpassed 5,000.
Scientific interest in fucoidan has risen rapidly in the past five years. In 2025 alone, more than 550 papers were published. The research community is on track to further exceed this annual figure by approximately 10% in 2026.
Acknowledging the momentum, Marinova's Research Director Dr Barbara Wimmer, said, “Fucoidans have been shown to impart a wide range of beneficial bioactivities. High purity, certified organic fucoidans are multifunctional ingredients that have been extensively studied. They are included in innovative nutraceutical, medical device and skincare applications for their gut health, immune support and healthy ageing properties.”
Dr Wimmer drew attention to the increasing number of studies attesting to the gut and digestive health benefits of high purity fucoidans. “These benefits include balancing the gut microbiome, fuelling the production of short-chain fatty acids and supporting gut integrity. In addition, Marinova’s high purity Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan has recently been scientifically validated as a prebiotic.”
Sustainably sourced and clinically validated, high purity fucoidans tick all the boxes for brands looking to capture consumer demand for natural and efficacious products.
- Fucoidans are complex polysaccharides produced naturally by brown seaweeds.
- More than 5,000 published papers attest to their various bioactivities.
- Maritech® organic fucoidans are the world’s only high purity, certified organic fucoidan extracts with global regulatory acceptance, including FDA-notified GRAS and EU Novel Foods authorisation.
- High purity fucoidans are supplied as a dry powder, are water soluble, and easy to formulate.
“Marinova remains a leading contributor to global fucoidan research, recently publishing the world’s first clinical trial investigating high purity fucoidan and prostate health,” finished Dr Wimmer. “Based on the significant relief of lower urinary tract symptoms and improved prostate-related quality-of-life, we expect fucoidan to have a bright future in the field of men’s urinary health.”
