A new review has examined the potential of a wide range of bioactive marine compounds to contribute to the future of biomedicine.

The advantages of a range of natural marine bioactives, including fucoidans, are summarised in the paper. The review focuses on their applications in the fields of nanomedicine and regenerative medicine. Fucoidans are increasingly being incorporated into nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery, and show great promise for wound healing, cartilage repair and bone regeneration.

The paper also highlights the significant advantages marine compounds offer over their synthetic alternatives. In addition to their numerous physiochemical properties, advantages include superior biocompatibility and biodegradability, and sustainability.

The paper, ‘Marine materials: New hope for biomedical applications’, was published in Cell Biomaterials.
