Multifunctional gut health benefits

As the gut health market continues to expand, so too has interest in a globally accepted definition of the phrase. An understanding of gut health, and how to support it, is not only key to future research but also to innovative product development. Foods and supplements often claim to support 'gut health' without scientific validation.

The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) published a consensus definition of gut health in early 2026 (Marco et al. 2026). Consideration was given to many unresolved issues related to gut health, including its overall importance to human health, how gut health should be measured, whether it is modifiable, and how research may expand future understanding. After reviewing clinically relevant and accessible metrics, an expert panel defined gut health as "a state of normal gastrointestinal function without active gastrointestinal disease and gut-related symptoms that affect quality of life."

How do fucoidans support healthy gut function?

Fucoidans can play a multifunctional role in gut health. High purity fucoidans produced by Marinova have been shown to support many of the key functional domains of gut health identified by ISAPP.

The gut health benefits of fucoidans have been shown to include:

"Scientific evidence demonstrates that fucoidans offer wide-ranging gut health benefits," said Marinova's Research Director, Dr Barbara Wimmer. "Gut health remains an important stream of Marinova's extensive R&D program and each year we continue to deepen global understanding of the multifunctional benefits of fucoidans. Based on this evidence, nutraceutical formulators are increasingly incorporating them into market-leading gut health products."
